Avatar. 1024x640 DARPA To Invest On Real Life Avatars
You may remember our post about PETMAN, a headless robot unlike a horrifying headless soul played by Christopher Walken in Sleepy Hollow, which was funded by DARPA to be used in US Army.

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) which is a US agency responsible for aiding the US military with the development of new technology has announced another huge project called Avatar. Well, the project here doesn’t mean a sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar movie, the agency is going to pour $7 million out of its budget into developing the surrogates for soldiers.

DARPA said “the Avatar program will develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine and allow it to act as the soldier’s surrogate.”

That means soon the science fiction from cinema screen come live in front of us. DARPA envisions such hardcore robots will be made for “room clearing, sentry control (and) combat casualty recovery.” They will have to deal with all the hard tasks faced by soldiers. The agency further notes that there will be “key advancements in telepresence and remote operation of a ground system,”

This life size project is going to be amazing once more progress is made down the road.
