Albeit, Pentagon had has invested huge money into R&D (Research and Development) of robotics in order to aid the US military the urge to “go for more” is undeterred.
After DARPA’s SeeMe constellation of disposable small satellites project, Naval Research Laboratory is working on robotic firefighters for Pentagon.
Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot, aka Saffir, will work as a team with humans to extinguish fires onboard ships and subs. The Saffir is designed to use its legs and arms just the way a human would use to mitigate the danger of losing human life at watercrafts where flames makes things tougher for the people working there.
The bot is expected to have enough hand coordination to tote fire hoses and throw extinguisher grenades.
In a statement Naval Research Laboratory explained the Saffir is made “to work cohesively as a team.” This bot is programmed to follow the person’s line of sight. So if Saffir’s master sees a potential danger onsite the bot will also notice it simultaneously, diminishing the danger as much as possible.
One flaw, Saffir’s batteries drain after 30 minutes regardless of the fact whether flames have been contained. The bot is said to be field tested in 18 months.
