Have you ever imagined a 3.2 billion pixels camera? Wondering what it would be capable of after hearing the power of PureView? Let me tell you, it will survey the entire sky above our heads every week.
US Department of Energy has green signaled a camera with that many pixels, 189 sensors, and having a diameter of 8 meters. It will be used to observe our galaxy and will help to solve the riddles about dark energy and dark matter.
Named Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), is designed by SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and its funding will be shared among DoE, National Science Foundation, and few other organization from around the globe.
If everything goes according to the plan, LSST will enter into construction phase by 2014.
