The law passed by Ethiopian government on May 24 has popped up on the media, lately, according to which any native of Ethiopia using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) such as Skype will be sentenced for 15 years.
The decision has said to be made due to the concerns about national security and to give boost to local telecom carrier. The legislation also discourages the use of video chatting, emailing, and any other mean of information communication.
“Government protecting of the telecommunications industry is not a new tactic. One Ethiopian sought asylum in the United Kingdom after the government accused him of using Skype to run an illegal competing phone service. A petition to stop his deportation from December 2011 was widely circulated online.”
In one of the Tweets appeared on Al Jazeera it state that Skype is not the one which has been declared illegal, “you’ll be baffled to know that BlackBerry is also illegal.”
