leap motion controller Leap Motion Controller used to control robotic arms and remote controlled boat

Ever since Leap Motion was introduced last year many similar devices have surfaced indicating that the motion sensing technologies are the future. Right after the developer units and software for development was released to third party developers we started seeing the potential of this new tech and its amazing applications.

Until now Leap Motion device that is near to its retail launch was only used to control software related stuff that was appearing virtually on the screen and the stuff many developers pulled was mind blowing. Developers of games, apps, and other kinds of softwares integrated the motion sensing technology to produce fantastic results. Now a new developer named Bryan Brown has found some new ways of how the Leap Motion can be used and has showed us more ways such devices can be useful in our lives other than being used with computers.

In the video Brown is seen controlling the OWI 535 robotic arm using the Leap Motion device. What he did was he manipulated the the controls on his screen and made the robot compatible with Leap Motion. In another video Brown is shown driving a fully remote controlled boat as he is controlling it with gestures through he Leap Motion controller.

Interestingly the software which Brown used to make Leap Motion compatible with robotic arm and remote controlled  boat is the NuiLogix. The developer behind the two experiments calls it the middleware app which is used to enhance the remote monitoring as well as controlling the devices.

The purpose of Brown’s demonstrations was to show the potential of Leap Motion and other devices alike, which can not only be used to control software but also utilized to control machinery and other physical devices.

Now is this way of controlling machines better than usual controls we have today, we don’t know however in the case of robotic arm the Leap Motion control based system was much better and intuitive than anything we have right now. You can watch both of Brown’s demonstration videos by going to the source link below.
