Open Settings.app on your iOS device and look for the iCloud option. Tap on iCloud and then look for ‘Find My iPhone’ from the menu. From there turn the ‘Find My iPhone’ option on. You will need an iCloud ID for this otherwise the service won’t work and the option to turn it on won’t be available to you.

Using Find My iPhone to locate your iOS device

Once you have set up the Find My iPhone service on your iOS device you can now use it to locate your device. Lets hope things never get to the point when you have to use Find My iPhone to locate or wipe your device but still you should know what to do in such situation.

There are two ways you can use the Find My iPhone service to locate and do other things with your iPhone remotely. You can either on any other iOS device and sign in with your Apple ID or you could access the iCloud website and use the Find My iPhone web app to do so.

You can do all the things mentioned above however you should keep the following points in mind.

  • You won’t be able to track your iPhone if the location services are off. You should keep them on all the time or you can turn them on when  you go out. If your iOS device is not trackable then Find My iPhone will show last seen location of the device.
  • You can only wipe your iPhone, ring a bell on it or display a message when the device is connected to the Internet. If it isn’t then you are out of luck – but you should wait until the thief or someone who found it connects it to the Internet.
  • You won’t be able to get see your iOS device on the map or use any other feature of the service if the device is turned off.
  • Find My iPhone will show you last location your device was recorded at, how much power is left in it and at what time it was active last time (meaning connected to the Internet).
